The vibrator is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, sex toy you will find on the market. These work by pulsating or throbbing by means of an electric motor, usually powered by small batteries. While most vibrators are operated by batteries, some bigger vibrators need to be plugged in to an electrical socket. Different shapes and sizes of vibrators are available, which are used to stimulate different parts of the body such as the clitoris, the vagina, the penis and the scrotum and to be used by one person or by two persons together. Vibrators are available for both men and women.

Some history

Invented in the late 19th century by an English physician Joseph Mortimer Granville, the vibrator was used as treatment to various ailments such as morbid irritability, indigestion, constipation, hysteria, arthritis, inflammations and tumors.

In the 1900s, vibrators used to be marketed on magazines together with other electrical household goods. These were marketed for their health and beauty benefits. However, as a result of vibrators being used in pornography, their advertisements disappeared in the 1920s.

During the sexual revolution of the 1960s, the vibrator started to become popular again. The first cordless vibrator was in fact patented on March 28 of 1968. This led to improvements in the vibrator design, adopting a one-piece construction design and being able to provide multiple speed settings. Ultimately, better production processes led to the cheaper manufacturing.

Why should you use a vibrator

The vibrator is the ideal toy for women who have difficulty in reaching orgasm through masturbation or sexual intercourse. Through vibrations generated by eccentric weights driven by an electric motor, a vibrator helps in enhancing pleasure when used as foreplay before, during or after sexual intercourse.

Types of vibrators

Vibrators may also be labelled as ‘body massagers’. Vibrators work with batteries while others work by plugging them into a wall socket. Larger vibrators usually require you to plug in to a wall socket, while small sized vibrators will usually work by batteries.

While most vibrators are shaped similar to a regular penis, some vibrators may also be shaped into larger dildos. However, a wide range of vibrators exists and most of them fall into several broad categories:

Clitoral

This type of vibrator stimulates the clitoris to provide pleasure and enhances orgasm. They are designed to touch the clitoris and thus are commonly small in size. They have a variety of colours and textures. Larger clitoral vibrators such as the Hitachi Magic Wand provide more powerful vibrations due to the larger size of the motor.
Some vibrators are also dual purpose and can be used to stimulate the clitoris and the G-spot at the same time, such as the rabbit vibrator. However, the most common type of clitoral vibrators are the eggs, which are small and shaped in the form of an egg. Due to the sheer smallness, they are ideal for putting in a pocket or handbag and are great to travel with. Other variations of the egg include the bullet (due to it being shaped like a bullet), miniature rockets and human tongue shaped vibrators.

Dildo shaped

Dildo shaped vibrators can be used for vaginal or anal insertion for individual or partner usage. These come in the shape of a penis and are made of plastic, silicone, rubber, vinyl, or latex. Different sizes and textures provide a variety of different experiences.

Waterproof

These types of vibrators can be submerged into water. They can be used in a pool, in the sea, or while taking a shower or a bath. Care should be taken to make sure that the vibrator can be taken under water, as some vibrators, although marketed as waterproof, cannot be submerged.

Submersible vibrators should provide an indication of how deep they can be submerged. If no such indication is given, then most probably the vibrator would not be ideal for submerging.

The Rabbit Vibrator

The rabbit vibrator is shaped like a rabbit. It is shaped like a penis, with an extension coming out. The extension has two prongs shaped like bunny ears, hence the name rabbit vibrator. The prongs are used to lift the clitoral hood and touch the clitoris, thus providing vibration to the clitoris. At the same time, the other part is inserted into the vagina. This would also vibrate, thus giving a vibrating sensation within the vagina.

G-spot Vibrator

The g-spot vibrator is shaped like a penis, with a curve at the end. When inserted into the vagina, the curve touches the g-spot or prostate, providing stimulation to the g-spot or prostate though vibrations.

Bendable Vibrators

These can adopt to the shape of the body by bending as required. These can be bent to reach the g-spot or prostate and thus acting just like a g-spot vibrator.

Remote controlled vibrators

These type of vibrators are controlled by means of a remote control. The remote control controls the vibrator through infrared, bluetooth or wifi. Vibrators which connect to a wifi or bluetooth network can also be controlled via mobile applications or through the internet. The device is worn by the partner, while another partner controls the vibration strength remotely. This is the ideal vibrator for long-distance partners. It can also be used in crowded areas where using a normal vibrator is not possible. The vibrator would be controlled via a remote without anyone noticing that you are actually wearing a vibrator and controlling it.

Pocket-rocket Vibrators

Cylindrically shaped vibrators called pocket-rockets are used to stimulate the clitoris and cannot be used for insertion. The bulges found at the tip of the vibrator stimulate the clitoris through vibrations. These are claimed to be very noisy and only provide one speed. They are usually small in size and powered by a single battery.

Butterfly Vibrators

The butterfly vibrator is shaped like a butterfly and is strapped around the legs and waist. Once strapped, it vibrates, thus providing stimulation to the clitoris. Some butterfly vibrators also have an insertable part into the vagina, providing vibrations to both the vagina and the clitoris. The butterfly vibrator can be worn instead of panties, or panties can be worn over the butterfly vibrators. They are ideally used when going out shopping, at work, or to be used while taking a stroll in the park.

Cockrings

Cockrings are attached to the base of the penis and are used to stimulate the penis and the clitoris during sexual intercourse. Cockrings can only be worn for a short period of time due to blood flow being restricted.

Sybian Vibrator

The Sybian vibrator has the shape of a horse back, with a penis shaped dildo to be inserted into the vagina, and a vibrating pad with grooves at the front for clitoral stimulation. The woman rides the Sybian just like riding a horse, inserting the dildo in the vagina and placing the clitoris on the grooves. The Sybian connects to an electrical socket and is controlled by means of a remote control. When turned on, the Sybian can be set to provide very powerful vibrations. Due to its shape, the Sybian is very big and takes a fair amount of space to store.
